Card Details
Mana CostCharacter Background
Baral, Chief of Compliance is a sleek control-and-combo enabler that rewards you for playing Magic on your terms while making everyone else wait in line. For just two mana, he discounts your instants and sorceries by {1}, which is excellent for tempo when you want to double-spell early, but he really shines in spell-heavy control shells and storm-style combo decks that need to stretch mana and chain cheap interaction. His second ability turns every counterspell into card selection: when you counter something, you may draw then discard, which smooths your hand and helps you dig for answers or combo pieces. In practice, that makes cards like Counterspell, Mana Leak, or even spell-copying effects more attractive, especially when paired with cheap cantrips and bounce to keep pressure off him. He is fragile as a 1/3, so protect him if possible; if Baral survives, he can quietly take over a game by turning every exchange into momentum.
